Not Just a New Year’s Resolution: See How to Stay Healthy All Year Long

Named one of the “Top Ten Healthiest Clubs in America,” St. Andrews Country Club believes that health and wellness are the foundation for making the most of life. Maureen Buchbinder, Health & Nutrition Educator at St. Andrews since 2014, offers one-on-one consultations to help both residents and employees live a healthier lifestyle. Here’s how Maureen suggests St. Andrews members work towards their health goals this year.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET

After enjoying all the culinary delights of the holiday season, many people resolve to eat healthier in the New Year. Known for fresh and inventive cuisines, the St. Andrews culinary program caters to each resident’s dietary needs, ensuring anyone can reach their goals. A well-balanced diet has incredible benefits, including a boosted immune system, a lower risk of heart disease, and stronger muscles. Maureen is also at the Gallery once a month during lunch hour to answer any nutrition-related questions and guide residents in creating food plans catered to their needs.

“The importance of maintaining a well-balanced diet is essential for preventing infections and diseases,” said Maureen. “When we eat a full range of lean protein, low glycemic carbs, healthy fats, and many different vegetables, and some fruits, we can control our weight, improve our immune system, and live a longer, healthier life.”

BE MORE ACTIVE

As the most popular New Year’s resolution, many people wish to create a steady exercise routine. Studies have shown that boosting activity levels can have tremendous effects on one’s health, including a reduced risk of heart disease, improved cognitive function, and strengthen muscles and bones. The Fitness Center at St. Andrews promotes the health and wellness of its members through a cardio room, aerobics room, separate mind and body Yoga studios, a comprehensive Pilates studio, and more. On-site trainers and physical therapists are also available to keep members motivated and enthusiastic.

“Exercise is essential to a healthy diet,” said Maureen. “They work hand in hand. Exercise entices you to make better food choices to attain your exercise goals and increase your metabolism. Researchers have found the more a person exercises, the more their diet tends to improve as well.”

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Ultimately, when it comes to health and wellness, every person is unique in how they achieve their goals. However, one secret to success could be to try something new. St. Andrews Members have a wide range of activities and machines available to find the perfect fit for them. Over 50 complimentary group classes are offered every week, including aquacise, Zumba, Pilates, yoga, and more.

“The biggest advice I can give to the residents who have made it their resolution to be more active and health-conscious this year is to try new activities, try a new machine, try healthier food choices, ask questions, and have fun with your new adventure,” said Maureen.

Along with state-of-the-art fitness facilities, St. Andrews is also home to two 18-hole championship golf courses with virtually no tee times and a notable tennis program with 14 clay courts. The Clubhouse is the epicenter of activity, with a full service, award-winning spa & salon, four restaurants, three pools, Kids Club, playground, and more. World Tennis Star Aaron Krickstein Shares His Views On the Sport’s Future

World Tennis Star

It seems everyone is heading outdoors to get healthy, and tennis is booming across the country. Of the 21.64 million Americans who say they played tennis last year, nearly 3 million were new to the game, a 44% increase. Participation in the sport increased by 22% in 2020 over 2019.

St. Andrews Country Club is home to 14 exceptional clay courts, a stadium court, and two pickleball courts. The tennis program is one of the best in the nation. Overseeing the program as the Director of Tennis is Aaron Krickstein, formerly ranked as high as No. 6 in the world. Aaron is a nine-time ATP Tour titlist and still holds the records for the youngest player to win an ATP Tour event at age 16 and the youngest in the world top 10 at age 17. In working for St. Andrews for over 18 years, Aaron has noticed an extensive growth of the tennis program over the past year. Here’s what he has to say about the growth of St. Andrews’ tennis program.

WHY DO YOU THINK TENNIS HAS BECOME SO POPULAR NATIONWIDE?

“I think the pandemic has certainly played a role in the resurgence of tennis since it is a great socially distant sport that is played mostly outside. Also, the sport has been documented as the most useful sport for human health. It’s a great cardio workout and a fun social sport that can be played for a lifetime.”

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE TENNIS FACILITIES AT ST. ANDREWS COUNTRY CLUB?

“The facilities at St. Andrews Country Club are first class. Our tennis courts are second to none and are known as the best tennis courts in South Florida for their consistently pristine condition. Our USPTA certified professional staff is quite diversified and very talented in helping members achieve their goals. Additionally, the program offers a wide variety of tournaments, mixers, round robins, challenge ladders, member-guest events, professional exhibitions, and a growing junior program. We also have monthly pickleball events as well as tennis and pickleball inter-club league matches against other local area clubs.”

WHAT IS PICKLEBALL? HOW IS IT RELATED TO TENNIS?

“Pickleball has become an extremely popular game nationwide. It is probably best described as a combination of ping pong, tennis, and badminton. It’s a very social game that is easy to learn and play in no time. Pickleball has captured the imagination of people all over the country.”

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A MEMBER WHO WANTS TO START PLAYING TENNIS BUT HAS NEVER PLAYED BEFORE?

“I would tell them that we have the staff and overall program to not only get you back on the court but to get you hooked into playing tennis for the rest of your life. Tennis is the sport for a lifetime, and the St. Andrews Tennis Program has something for everyone.

As Director of Tennis, my goal is to make the tennis experience an enjoyable one for all our members and their guests. Whether they take a lesson or clinic, play socially, or participate in one of our many events, I believe that we accomplish that mission every day of the year!”

An exceptional tennis program is not the only amenity residents of St. Andrews Country Club can enjoy. St. Andrews is also home to two 18-hole championship golf courses with virtually no tee times. The Clubhouse is the social gathering place of the community, with a full-service, award-winning spa & salon, fitness center, four restaurants, three pools, Kids Club, playground and more. A Look at How This Boca Raton Country Club Supports Breast Cancer Research and Awareness

Built with a vision to create an exceptional residential and golfing community, St. Andrews Country Club has become known for far more than magnificent estate residences, unparalleled amenities, and two 18-hole championship golf courses. St. Andrews Country Club members support countless inspiring causes each year, including breast cancer research and awareness. Discover how LPGA Tour Superstar, Morgan Pressel and St. Andrews Country Club support breast cancer research and awareness throughout the community.

THE MORGAN PRESSEL FOUNDATION

The Morgan Pressel Foundation was started in order to further the fight against cancer, particularly breast cancer. Morgan, St. Andrews’ resident LPGA touring professional, wanted to honor the memory of her mother, Kathryn Krickstein Pressel, who passed away at an early age of breast cancer. “I feel like people put their own health on hold (during the pandemic), the routine checkups that they would normally get,” says Pressel. “Especially for mammograms, because they were afraid to go into a hospital, or into a setting like that. Unfortunately, that’s not the answer. You’re not going to be able to find breast cancer if you don’t go actively searching for it.” St. Andrews members have addressed this need to support and educate others on breast cancer awareness through one unique club event each year.

THE MORGAN & FRIENDS GOLF TOURNAMENT

St. Andrews has been proud to host the Morgan & Friends charity golf tournament for several years, exclusively for Club Members, with proceeds going to aid Morgan in her fight against breast cancer. Members and golf professionals alike tee up to show their support, including Brittany Lincicome, Lexi Thompson, So Yeon Rye, Martin Hall, Colt Ford, and more. Each year’s success of this event is credited largely to the professional golfers who donate their time, our sponsors, and the overwhelmingly supportive community of St. Andrews, who believe in our efforts to eradicate breast cancer. Each year the money we raise supports patient care and research at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and the Sylvester Cancer Center at the University of Miami.

This year we celebrated the 14th annual tournament, and while a little different considering the pandemic, Club members were able to play some championship golf in hopes of raising half a million dollars towards Pressel’s cause. Over the past 14 years, the Morgan & Friends Golf Tournament has raised close to 10 million dollars. Pressel noted, “each year my fellow members continue to amaze me with their generosity and goodwill towards the general community.”

INTRODUCING THE MAMMOVAN

With the outpouring support and fundraising efforts from St. Andrews Country Club members, Pressel’s dreams became a reality. In 2010 the Kathryn Krickstein Pressel Mammovan, under the direction of the Boca Raton Regional Hospital, was born. This mobile miracle travels throughout Palm Beach County providing affordable breast exams and health care to those who might not otherwise receive it. This month, the Mammovan will provide its 15,000th mammogram since 2010. Also at Boca Regional is the Morgan Pressel Center for Cancer Genetics, a place where those with strong family history can discover early on if they are at a higher risk of having breast cancer, and where they can get counseling on further treatments.

A COMMUNITY BUILT ON SUPPORTING EACH OTHER

Rick Dente, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager at St. Andrews Country Club said, “We are proud of Morgan, her foundation and all of the St. Andrews Country Club Members for putting together another first-class golf tournament and fundraising effort. The Club has seen a consistent increase in participation by our membership, especially our new members, who have become fully engaged in the cause and effort. We look forward to hosting even grander breast cancer awareness events next year. I’ve been honored to watch this member-only event grow into the success it is today.”

Paul Clivio, Director of Golf at St. Andrews Country Club, proudly shares his story and why raising money for breast cancer research is so meaningful to his family. “Most doctors who see my sister-in-law’s records can’t believe she has survived all this time, but her will is so strong…. she is my hero!” After watching the membership’s support blossom, Clivio hopes to get more men involved each year and is always proud of those dedicated members who work tirelessly to raise funds for life-saving research.

Among rivaled amenities and one impeccable social calendar, St. Andrews’ philanthropy events continue to raise the bar—especially in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. St. Andrews’ distinctions include a “Distinguished Club of the World” and a “Top Ten Healthiest Clubs in America,” its world-class amenities make life a permanent vacation. With superior amenities, including two 18-hole championship golf courses and virtually no tee times. It is home to LPGA touring professional and resident Morgan Pressel. Aaron Krickstein, formerly ranked No. 6 in the world, oversees the tennis program and 14 clay courts. The Club offers a full service, award-winning spa & salon, fitness center, four restaurants, three pools, Kids Club, playground, air-conditioned game rooms, and catering space for up to 350. TRENDING SINCE 2013

Dry Salt Therapy (Halotherapy) was identified as a trend in the US spa industry in 2013. Initially, the primary market was stand-alone facilities, franchises, and additions to other wellness businesses. The industry has seen extensive growth, and currently, over 675 facilities are offering Halotherapy due to positive wellness benefits. Organizations have been formed inclusive of over 700 members throughout the country.

Salt therapy is not a new concept in many European Countries. Health benefits have been recognized for many years. WHY SALT THERAPY

Active salt therapy is a natural approach to addressing many respiratory ailments and skin conditions, such as: asthma, sinusitis, eczema and psoriasis. A special piece of equipment known as a Halogenerator grinds and crushes pure sodium chloride into micro-sized particles, which are dispersed into the air. The room is then filled with a fine mist of salt to begin your journey of complete wellness and relaxation.

The primary characteristics of salt, being its super absorbency, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory qualities, allow for extensive benefits following therapy sessions. Salt therapy has been known to reduce bronchial inflammation, decrease airborne pollen particles from airways, and improve skin conditions. For those looking for an extra immunity boost these days, salt therapy helps strengthen one’s immune system to help decrease allergic reaction to pollens; it both cleanses and sanitizes the airways and prevents and treats the common cold and flu. One session can even improve your sleep and reduce snoring!

The Best Boca Beaches You Should Check Out

The Best Boca Beaches

You may know Boca Raton by our world renown beaches, but have you felt the offshore breeze, stuck your toes in the white, pillow-like sand, or marveled at the pristine blue ocean lying just along our coastline? While South Florida beaches bring in a number of guests throughout the year, Boca Raton harbors many quaint, secluded gems that make for the best days on the water. Still inclusive of adequate parking and well-maintained facilities, here is our list of the best Boca beaches you should explore this year.

SPANISH RIVER PARK

Whether you’re looking for a quiet escape to watch the sunrise or a quaint spot along the water for a picnic, Spanish River Park offers unique views of both the intracoastal and the Atlantic. The best views, however, can be seen from the 40-foot observation tower, revealing a wide variety of breathtaking wildlife below. Follow the tunnels to the beach where you will discover miles of sand dunes, crashing waves, and unique Florida shells. This private-like beachfront can be a great spot to watch sea turtles hatch at night too.

SOUTH BEACH PARK

There is never a shortage of private spots on this 24.5-acre beach area—in fact, the park features beach access in three locations. You can leave your chairs at home when visiting South Beach, rent out lounge chairs and an umbrella for the full experience. To those looking to explore outdoor experiences, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and even Zumba classes are available. Among unique snorkeling opportunities, South Beach’s canopied walkways are also favored haunts for additional encounters with rare flora and fauna.

RED REEF PARK

Calling all the picnic enthusiasts, this oceanfront park and abundance of shady palms are for you. Paralleled with charming picnic areas, Red Reef Park is known to be one of the best snorkeling spots in the area. We suggest visiting during low tides, when you can observe red reef in knee-shallow water without snorkeling gear. The Park is always well kept, holding endless opportunities for blissful photo opportunities including several creatively painted walls of beautiful coral reef wildlife.

THE BOCA RATON BEACH CLUB

Elevate any beach day with a trip to this Waldorf Astoria property, a great place for your visiting guests to stay. Endure a day of R&R on a daybed along the Beach Club’s private golden beach or turn a beach day into a vacation with an overnight stay. Recently opened, the resort’s Mirasol restaurant’s Mediterranean menu has quickly become a local favorite. Question is, what cocktail will you choose to go with your day in the sun?

SOUTH INLET PARK

There is no shortness of crystal-clear water and powdered sand at this oceanside spot. Neighboring The Boca Raton, this picturesque park offers an escape to stroll along the beach or watch boats drive by. Take advantage of the park’s grills for the ultimate beach barbeque or grab your camera and hit the park at sunrise along the Boca Inlet for impressive shots of all the action.

ST. ANDREWS AQUATIC CENTER

Boca Raton may flourish with pristine private beaches; however, the South Florida weather can often best be enjoyed right at home. Why and How is Golf Course Aerification Different in South Florida?

Golf Course

Among world-renown beaches, blossoming real estate, and unmatched weather, more and more people flock to South Florida each year for the many signature golf courses. St. Andrews Country Club offers 36 holes of championship golf, including its Arnold Palmer Signature Design® with rolling fairways and berms, terraced greens with deep bunkers, and testy water hazards. Maintaining Florida courses like these is anything but a walk in the park, requiring a tedious golf course aerification process. Find out more about this process currently underway at St. Andrews from the Director of Golf, Paul Clivio.

Primarily we aerify for thatch removal. Over time, water sits on the Green’s surface and nutrients don’t get to where they need to, leading to an undesirable spongy surface similar to a scalp. Despite the observed benefits of aerification, however, the process can be stressful on turf when performed under pressure such as heat and shade or on turf in bad health. St. Andrews has identified the best schedule for each course’s aerification with these ideals in mind.

There are many moving parts to course closures for aerification: removing thatch, top-dressing with sand, scalping the turf down to a brown color and re-growth. These are all part of the cultural practices that must be performed in South Florida for a golf course to perform on a year-round basis. This is also the most crucial part of growing healthy turfgrass throughout the entire golfing season. Our aerification process will include:

FAIRWAY VERTICUTTING

Fairway Verticutting has been performed on the Fazio to remove the older leaf blades and tighten the canopy for next season. The Fairways are then scalped at a lower height of cut to compress the plant and promote more undergrowth, reducing the friction and holding onto desired Green speeds until the Palmer Course aerification begins in mid-June. You will see the lines on the Greens but ball roll should not be affected with this routine practice.

TOPDRESSING AND AERIFYING

Topdressing is then performed to help promote the firm and fast Fairways that are desired.

We then Aerify on top of the sand, where we purposely redistribute the organic material.

Aerification on Greens also takes place allowing the methane gasses to escape from a season’s worth of fertilizer applications and helps to combat compaction. Needless to say, it takes a lot of labor!

RECOVERY

Recovery may be the largest part of the process though it is critical to growing healthy Bermudagrass each year. Above is a Dry-Ject sand channel shot through the organic layer in the Fazio Greens. This is what allows the Greens roots to find oxygen easier.

After a strenuous aefication process like this, it’s no wonder the legendary Arnold Palmer and PGA pros Phil Mickelson, Ken Duke, John Daly, and Rocco Mediate love to play exhibitions here. With all our summer annuals having been installed around the Clubhouse Grounds and quick turnarounds, St. Andrews members can look forward to the reopening of our signature courses throughout the summer.

There’s No Better Place to Live or WORK!

There’s No Better Place

Far more than a secure, comfortable, and elegant lifestyle, this South Florida Country Club’s deep sense of community and friendship exists not only among members but staff as well. St. Andrews Country Club members are always put first, though a lot can be said for the great ways they show appreciation for our staff. From attending lavish employee events or specialty department outings, to joining a strong community of coworkers to generous benefits and compensation, we encourage you to discover why people truly love working at St. Andrews.

MEMORABLE EVENTS

Most notably, St. Andrews hosts both a Season Kick-Off Event and an End of Season Thank You Event to show appreciation for the staff’s hard work and to get excited for each season to come. Just as families gather for dinners, reunions, and holidays, St. Andrews hosts an Annual Holiday Party for employees and their immediate families. The staff is celebrated with undeniably delicious food, prize raffles, and great memories each year. Suppose the team isn’t spending time together at work. In that case, you can catch them enjoying manager evenings out, summer department get-togethers, or even at the Executive Staff Off-Site Meeting & Dinner with spouses. To keep up with the growing St. Andrews Country Club membership, our staff is constantly gaining new additions on every occasion, but once a part of the team they quickly become family.

CONSTANT SUPPORT AND RECOGNITION

Much can also be said about the Club’s generosity and thoughtfulness in both supporting and highlighting everyone. St. Andrews focuses on building success through comprehensive trainings, including that of the department heads, and providing an employee relief fund in times of need. Within the last year, many people struggled to find stability during the pandemic, but in keeping our restaurants and facilities open, the Club generously provided for our beloved employees.

Members and staff alike can easily identify employees by uniform though St. Andrews works to make each friendly face more familiar through annual employee yearbooks as well.

Not only does St. Andrews show their appreciation through gifts and lively events, but it also elevates staff who regularly go above and beyond. The Club rewards an Employee of the Month and an Employee of the Year for both Front of House and Back of House and a Manager of the Quarter. What may seem like small titles are always largely celebrated in this community.

GENEROUS GIFTS

In the true spirit of giving back, like-minded residents and management gift more than titles for outstanding staff members. Those individuals making positives waves throughout the community are often shown gratitude with $100 Lightning Strikes gift certificates. Nonetheless, all St. Andrews Country Club staff are met with complimentary lunch or dinner depending on one’s schedule and free uniforms for departments where appropriate. The gifts don’t end there. At the Annual Employee Service Luncheon, staff is further recognized for their years of service with a mouthwatering lunch, plaques, and fruitful milestone gifts.

Members have chosen St. Andrews for more than 30 years for the important attributes that make for a vibrant and growing community – uncompromising quality, astute stewardship, and flawless service. By harboring success and truly showing appreciation for our staff, St. Andrews will continue to be a distinguished, loving club among both members and employees.

St. Andrews Continues Support of Local Charities through Recent Golf Events

The fundamentals of golf may never change, but the way you experience the game certainly does—especially when it’s for a great cause. St. Andrews Country Club’s 36 holes of championship golf, including our Arnold Palmer Signature Design®, host not only casual games but also sought-after charitable tournaments. Most recently the Club hosted their annual Men’s Classic which raised $50,000 for the Boca Raton Regional Hospital. First place winners Scott Schwartz, Andrew Parker, Edwin Levine, Peter Linchitz, and Steven Rosenfeld, were among more than 50 participants who played in the riveting tournament. Discover what makes these charitable events some of the most attended at St. Andrews.

St. Andrews golf tournaments are always distinguished by their extravagant themes, known for engaging the entire club membership. St. Andrews Director of Golf, Paul Clivio, notes, “We create some of the best events anywhere for our membership” from black-tie galas and festive holiday parties by day to guest speakers, cooking classes, and sporting events by day. Charity golf events are anything but rare at St. Andrews and are known to support a multitude of touching causes including:

  • The Boca Raton regional hospital through our Golf Classic which we have raised over $600,000 in the past 15-20 years
  • The Morgan Pressel Foundation for breast cancer once a year which we have raised nearly $10,000 million in 12 years
  • JARC and Ruth Rales every year
  • The PGA Hope foundation through our St. Andrews Program to help veterans enjoy the game of golf
  • We support the 1st tee of Palm Beaches multiple times a year with unique events
  • This year we will raise money for the PGA Foundation though the Section event in October

On top of frequent Club events and tournaments, each year the Club gathers for a big golf Fundraiser event to donate hundreds of clubs, bags, shoes, balls, clothes, hats, as well as cash to 1st Tee. 1st Tee is an international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to kids and teens. This event is known for gathering such large numbers of supplies that St. Andrews is expected to make about six donations throughout the year.

When asked what a potential resident member can expect from the golf experience at St. Andrews, there is only one answer. An incredible experience from start to finish. The staff will start you on either of our two championship courses, The Palmer Signature or the Fazio II, both with plush green fairways and fast tiff eagle greens. You will see beautiful holes, decorated homes, and the overall beauty of the St. Andrews experience the entire way. It’s no wonder this South Florida Country Club draws in some of the best golf professionals year-round.

St. Andrews’ Play for Pink Raises $100k for Charity

Far more than exceptional golf, tennis, fitness, and spa, this private club community generously pays tribute to its community and reputable charities each year. With magnificent dining venues, world-class amenities, and an endless social calendar, St. Andrews’ philanthropy events continue to raise the bar—especially this year’s Play for P.I.N.K. event. Raising over $100k for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Play for P.I.N.K. broke Club records and its achievements will not be forgotten. Discover what Shelley Harris and her committee did to make this St. Andrews Country Club charity event so successful.

RICH BOCA RATON HISTORY

This season’s goal, like those in past years, was to hold a tennis and golf event where members could gather in pink to show continued support for Play for P.I.N.K. (PFP). All donations made benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), but thanks to the underwriting by the Estée Lauder Companies Breast Cancer Campaign, this year PFP was able to donate 100% of its proceeds to BCRF. BCRF is largely recognized by St. Andrews members, though the Foundation’s established studies and dedication to breast cancer research draw in even more support from our South Florida community.

BCRF is the largest private funder of breast cancer research in the world and the highest rated breast cancer organization in the U.S. In October 2020, BCRF awarded grants to support the work of nearly 275 scientists in leading medical and academic institutions across the world. PFP is currently funding 24 of these brilliant researchers. BCRF-funded researcher Dr. William Kaelin won the 2019 Nobel Prize for his discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. These findings have paved the way for promising new strategies to fight a wide range of disorders, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, anemia, and many others. St. Andrews is proud to be among many who support such a life-changing cause.

GENEROUS ST. ANDREWS’ MEMBER PARTICIPATION

Each Club charity event brings in countless attendees, but it is the St. Andrews staff and volunteer members who we must thank for the club’s successes. This year PFP wouldn’t have been made possible without the 40 tennis players, 10 Pickleball players, and the entire St. Andrews Tennis Staff led by Aaron Krickstein, chaired by Barbara Broder, Deborah Gross and Lindsay Hennessey; their support was truly invaluable. Unsung helpers like Judi Falk, Nancy Schiller, and Jane Davis, along with Jennifer Capuano and Chef Steve Viggiano who negotiated any and all behind-the-scenes challenges, are among those we must thank for Play for P.I.N.K.’s seamless execution and achievements. The entire Golf staff, led by Paul Clivio, Mike Johnson, Terry Farino, Jordan Mathers, Tyler Lunderville, Austin Lake, Victoria Mathews and her lovely ladies must be recognized as well.

EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP

Considering the safety and wellbeing of St. Andrews residents, this season undoubtedly tested everyone’s ability to make decisions differently, but the pro shop always discovered the right ways to solve every problem. PFP Chairwoman, Shelley Harris, has had the opportunity to work with “a group of the most capable women anyone could have on a committee” over the last seven years. Harris noted that “with Arlene Ruff as treasurer, Judy Cooperman as sponsorship chair, and Alice Kent as advisor, I never had to worry that we would succeed.” These strong women have paved the way for even more exquisite charity events in St. Andrews’ future, but believe “it is time for a new group of ladies to take the lead in season 2022. We will all be there to show you the way if you want our help.”

At the completion of our Play for P.I.N.K. tournament, the ladies had raised $80,000. By switching the Men’s Tournament from Wednesday to Saturday the men raised over $20,000 (more than triple raised in prior years) bringing the total for the week to $100,622. The unparalleled generosity of the St. Andrews community made this year’s charitable journey something the Club will never forget.

How is this Country Club Keeping Members Engaged During a Pandemic?

Closed businesses, restricted travel, and social distancing—it has been difficult to comfortably connect with friends and family during the pandemic. Some communities have taken new steps to stay connected including one of South Florida’s premier country clubs which continues to go above and beyond to safely keep members engaged. St. Andrews Country Club, nestled in Boca Raton, Florida, is known for hosting some of the most extraordinary events and galas year-round. From socials on occasions like New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, to the extravagant Ladies’ Card Party and family events such as the Winter Carnival, Petting Zoo, and Color War, members look forward to new experiences each month. While events have looked a little different, this year has been no exception. Take a look into some of members’ favorite St. Andrews events held throughout the pandemic.

SOCIALLY DISTANCED CONCERTS

Sold out arenas and weekend long festivals may be a day of the past; however, St. Andrews has offered a new way for members to still enjoy their favorite music. Taking advantage of the spacious golf amenities, the Club has offered a new concert experience on the St. Andrews Driving Range. Attendees of events like the “Great To ‘SEA’ You Again” two-night show enjoyed a socially distanced performance on 15′ x 15′ private islands dotted the driving range. This two-night experience featured a Greek theme, including a blue and white dress code and matching world-class cuisine. Guests enjoyed a Greek style mezzo plate, a trio plate of filet mignon, lamb chops, herb marinated sea bass, and Chef’s Peggy’s delectable dessert trio. Not only has each concert been accompanied by undoubtably delicious food, but the performers have been even better. St. Andrews has hosted Majesty of the Rock and The Private Stock Band in the past, just imagine who will be next.

A SPEAKER SERIES

St. Andrews strives to bring new experiences to members every day in the form of lessons, classes, and throughout the pandemic, a new speaker series. With more time at home, why not find a new hobby or learn something new? St. Andrews has brought in numerous speakers throughout the year including Dr. Oge Marques, a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and, by courtesy, a Professor of Information Technology at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Marques met with members over Zoom to address how to stay sane in the age of social media, big data, and artificial intelligence. His decorated background and expertise on “the social dilemma” were both eye opening and intriguing to say the least.

MOVIE CLUB

Are you a movie connoisseur or do you stick to television series? Whether you have seen one or one hundred films throughout the years, St. Andrews has put together an iconic movie club to introduce residents to the classics. In December, the club met via Zoom to watch the Alfred Hitchcock film “The Lady Vanishes,” a 1938 mystery/thriller featuring a group of travelers delayed by an avalanche. There is nothing like movie night with your close friends and family, and in attending movie club events residents can do just that in a safe way. Grab your laptop, favorite snack, and join us at the next one!

A LITERARY SOCIETY

For those looking to stick their nose in a book, or rather enjoy being read to, look no further. The St. Andrews Literary Society brings the community together to indulge in literary masterpieces that are sure to brighten anyone’s day. The meetings are led by Deborah Witham, a graduate of Indiana University with a Ph. D. in English with more than 30 years of teaching experience at the University of Kentucky. Now retired, she teaches lifelong learning classes on literary topics and facilitates book groups across Florida. St. Andrews Country Club is hosting events like Virtual Trivia and Virtual Bingo for members to enjoy socializing without having to leave the house. Detailed instructions are available for each event with steps to download, meeting IDs, and links to RSVP if necessary. The first Virtual Bingo of the year was a great success. Those who have attended these events have been happier than children on Christmas morning when they are met with familiar faces and plenty of laughs. While members of this Boca Raton country club haven”t been able to spend as much time together in-person, the community has done a tremendous job at staying connected with members virtually. AN AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Not only can members meet neighbors at virtual events, but new members are now able to get a first glance at St. Andrews’ blossoming community through an Ambassador. Ambassador selections are made based on similar demographics and interests to the new member, making it easier for them to have something in common and relate to the new members’ wants and desires from their new Club membership. New members love having the familiar face of their Ambassador while they settle in around the Club and get to know more about the people and the places onsite. These may become their first friends in town and in the words of one resident, “There are friends of the road and friends of the heart. We have a lot of friends of the heart here.”

What Makes Tennis One of the Most Popular Sports at St. Andrews?

Among world-class dining, signature golf courses, and one-of-a-kind spa experiences, are St. Andrews Country Club’s 14 exceptional clay tennis courts. From pickup matches to league play, our tennis program offers a complete schedule for players of all skill levels. Overseeing this exceptional complex is our Director of Tennis, the very gifted Aaron Krickstein. Formerly ranked as high as No. 6 in the world, Aaron is a nine-time ATP Tour titlist and still holds the record for the youngest player to win an ATP Tour event at age 16, and also the youngest to crack the world’s top 10 at age 17. After years of experience at St. Andrews, Aaron has observed extensive growth in our tennis program. Discover Aaron’s take on why tennis is one of the club’s most popular sports.

High Event Attendance

Each year the St. Andrews social calendar is filled with events from cooking classes and black-tie dinners to a multitude of sports clinics and tournaments. In general, our tennis events have grown tremendously over the last couple of years. Many of our events are at near or full capacity, which has been wonderful for our program. Unfortunately, this past season with COVID-19 club restrictions and guidelines, we have not been able to run some of our events. However, we did have our Pro-Am, Play for Pink event and our Ladies and Men’s Member-Guest tournaments in early March 2020. All had outstanding attendance and excitement. We have also seen a terrific uptick in attendance this past year in our Twilight Tennis Mixers on Monday evenings.

Activities for All

Our Tennis Program incorporates a wide variety of activities designed for players of all of ages and abilities. St. Andrews always ensures that the tennis experience is enjoyable for everyone. We run Complimentary Tennis and Pickleball Clinics, monthly Twilight Mixers, Round Robins, Ladies, Men’s and Mixed Doubles Tournaments, Inter Club Challenge matches, and Pro-Am events. Most importantly, we have league play for those members looking for a little competitive challenge vs our local neighboring clubs. The St. Andrews Professional Staff provide first class lessons and are great at attracting not only new beginner players but also former players who would like to start up again. We also have a fantastic Jr. Development Program, designed for kids looking to learn and play the sport for a lifetime – tennis!

Unmatched facilities

I, Aaron Krickstein, believe there are many reasons why members choose to play here over our club competition. First, our top-notch Professional Staff. We all have tremendous experience, tennis knowledge and have unique backgrounds and personalities that make our Tennis Staff the Best of the Best! We also have the best maintained and groomed tennis courts in South Florida. Finally, the tennis experience at SACC is fun, exciting, and very enjoyable for everyone – whether you take a lesson, participate in one of our events or tournaments, play socially with friends or participate on a SACC Tennis Team.

Future Growth

I see excellent future growth in the St. Andrews community and Tennis Program. The club has seen many new, younger tennis playing members moving into the community in the last couple of years. Members with very young children, who are eager to participate in all of the club’s fun and exciting activities. We see potential for possibly more Ladies and or Men’s tennis teams and additional tennis and pickleball events due to increased attendance and more playing members.

There are many ways to join the tennis community at St. Andrews, and my advice would be to get involved in our program as soon as possible. Come to a complimentary clinic, book a lesson with one of my Professional Staff, join a team to get involved with our program and meet other new players and members. We have a fantastic Tennis Program and know that if you come over to the courts to play, you will be very grateful you did!

Not only does our club’s Tennis Program entice crowds, but St. Andrews Country Club offers a vibrant, top-quality lifestyle. Its distinctions include a “Distinguished Club of the World” and a “Top Ten Healthiest Clubs in America,” and its world-class amenities make life a permanent vacation. St. Andrews’ Guide to the Ultimate New Year Detox

Each year we create new resolutions for ourselves– some realistic and others not so much. Whether the goal is to lose weight, step up your skills in the kitchen, or spend more time doing what makes you happy, St. Andrews Country Club wants to make them a reality. For those in need of a 2021 detox, St. Andrews’ Health & Nutrition Educator, Maureen Buchbinder, has you covered.

Unfortunately, our modern lifestyle exposes us to an increasingly complex and deteriorating environment, which affects our diet, and obviously our mind and body. Toxins cause obesity and inflammation where a detox cleanses and alkalinizes the body & improves absorption and assimilation of food. People who struggle with a lot of chronic health complaints and do not respond well to conventional therapies will undergo remarkable transformations on this detox plan. Bloating, constipation or diarrhea, food cravings, headaches, chronic fatigue, & heart disease will be lessened on the Detox program as well. Discover Maureen’s 5-part detox that will help start your year off even healthier.

1. GETTING RID OF TOXINS

Unloading our bodies and minds of common toxins gives us a healthy start. If you avoid toxic foods, you will feel energized, lose weight, and sleep better. Maureen advises that during the detox, avoid alcohol, caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas), corn, dairy products, meat, processed foods, or food additives, refined oils and hydrogenated fats (butter, margarine) sugar, artificial sweeteners, crackers, and cookies. No stimulants: diet pills and decongestants.

2. FIXING YOUR GUT

Healthy digestion and absorption are crucial for good health and proper detoxification. Diets can often be constricting; however, Maureen’s Detox Program offers an array of food options.
Here are foods you will eat:
-Brown rice, quinoa, & bulgar
-Filtered or Spring water
-Fish (especially sardines, wild salmon, sole, flounder, trout, and cod)
-Fruits: preferably organic and include lemon, do not eat more than 2-3/day
-Fresh vegetables: preferably organic & fresh vegetable broth
-Legumes: beans and lentils

3. GETTING YOUR FLUIDS MOVING

As part of an overall detoxification program, increasing circulation of blood and lymph throughout the body will refresh, oxygenate, and energize your cells. To improve circulation, Maureen recommends aerobic activity for 30 minutes, five times a week. Exercise will increase your heart rate, stimulate your body to release toxins, reduce inflammation, and increase intestinal elimination. It will allow the muscles to flush toxins that have built up in your tissues, and help burn off toxic stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol too.

4. LOVING YOUR LIVER AND SWEATING IT OUT

Exercise not only increases your heart rate, but it also increases sweating and toxin elimination through the skin and enhances the oxygenation of all your tissues. The liver is an essential part of break downs of toxins too, but by eliminating unhealthy foods and drinks such as alcohol you can maintain better overall health in such digestive organs.

5. DETOX YOUR HEART, MIND, AND SPIRIT

For a more relaxing experience try yoga, it will help purify your mind and the body as well as your spirit. Its benefits go far beyond just stretching and toning. The yoga poses will help relax your nervous system and increase circulation of blood to oxygenate your cells. St. Andrews’ members have also found it to also be a lot of fun to try with friends and family. As Maureen Buchbinder says, “stop, breathe, experience” this year and try something new.

Whether you are looking to try Maureen’s Detox Program or take private golf lessons, there’s always something new to love at St. Andrews. This Boca Raton Club was Made for Lovers of Golf & Wine

If a perfect marriage of tastes can be found in the country club industry it is that between invigorating and challenging golf and a plethora of wine tasting and education events with wine cellars to impress. This perfect combination for the avid golfer who’s also a wine enthusiast can be found in Boca Raton, Florida; sip and chip in style – St. Andrews Country Club sets the bar for both.

Great Golf

St. Andrews offers 36 holes of championship golf spread over two gorgeous courses – the Palmer Course and the Fazio II Course. Rolling fairways and berms, greens with deep bunkers, and testy water hazards characterize both and because of the changing rolls and elevations, the courses require players to execute but also think, meaning that every round offers a new set of challenges. The Palmer course is known by Members to present risk and reward opportunities that keep the game fresh – even for the devoted daily player. As an Arnold Palmer Signature Design course, the layout is the culmination of Palmer’s more than 40 years of building golf courses of distinction. The Fazio II course, designed by golf course architect Tom Fazio II, offers a particularly challenging and long game at over 7,000 yards, but the layout has generous landing areas and open approaches to the greens.

To ensure all members keep up their game and can even practice when the weather isn’t optimal, the Club offers a state-of-the-art Golf Performance Center with an indoor hitting bay, V1 Digital Coaching System and FlightScope Launch Monitor® technologies, and a Callaway Golf® branded club fitting area. There is also an outdoor driving range, chipping and putting greens, luxurious locker rooms, club and shoe cleaning service, pro shop and private golf carts. Members can also participate in the full schedule of clinics, tournaments and special events.

Worthy Wines

St. Andrews Members continue to prove they are wine connoisseurs and have shown so much interest in all of the wine tastings and events the Club hosts. Due to quarantine conditions, the Club has taken some of these wine events online, offering mini video series called Wines Around the World where Matthew Darnall, Food & Beverage Manager, takes you through a 5 to 10-minute educational introduction to the eight international grape varietals. The wine is also available for pickup at the Clubhouse from the newly established Mini-Market so Members can enjoy the full experience of the virtual learning and tasting from the comfort of their own homes. Here are a few of the recent videos from the wine series:

How This Club Welcomes New Members in Style

With the increased and record-breaking summer of sales there have been a lot of new families to welcome to the lifestyle at St. Andrews Country Club. In order to ensure each new member feels welcome, comfortable and ready to enjoy all that the Club has to offer we’ve developed a unique Ambassador Program as a great way to welcome new members and help them to quickly acclimate to the Club. Here’s how it works.

At first, once a new member has joined, a unique Membership Committee Member is specially selected as their Ambassador. Ambassador selections are made based on similar demographics and interests to the new member, making it easier for them to have something in common and relate to the new members’ wants and desires from their new Club membership. New members love having the familiar face of their Ambassador while they settle in around the Club and get to know more about the people and the places onsite.

The Ambassador will also reach out to remind new members about specific New Member Events, as well as standing Club events within the different amenities – golf, tennis, fitness, card playing, etc. Feedback on the Ambassador Program has been very positive, from both sides. Members have expressed how great it is to meet people and create long-lasting friendships with new neighbors.

The annual sales goal for 2020 was 30, and we finished the fiscal year with an impressive 52 closed sales. With this many new faces onsite, St. Andrews feels it’s important to make everyone feel welcome and at home and the Ambassador Program helps achieve just that. The sales increase and the positive feedback from all families joining St. Andrews is a testament to the vibrantly social and active private membership community of unmistakable character and enduring quality that makes this Club so special.
